Thorough Children’s Vision Exams

Our children’s eye exams go beyond checking their prescription. We complete a comprehensive assessment of their visual skills, based on their age level and expected development, starting as young as 6 months old.

Vision is part sensory and part motor, and develops over many years. Interruptions in development or undiagnosed and undercorrected vision problems can impact the visual system can impact your child for years to come.

Our in-depth examinations can catch more than refractive errors like nearsightedness. We also look at how well the visual system works together, allowing for timely intervention to get their development back on track, if needed.

Set your child up for success by scheduling a developmental eye exam today.

Keeping Their Eye Exam Fun

Our experienced team loves working with kids. We work hard to build a safe and welcoming environment for positive eye care experiences.

We play Disney Channel in the reception area, keep treasure boxes in the exam rooms, and give out stickers to our brave young patients. We’re also happy to explain to your child what each machine does in the exam room, so they understand what’s going on.

Additionally, we are experienced practitioners of children with special needs, and know how to create a safe environment for kids with sensory sensitivities. If your child has particular needs during their visit, please let us know by calling ahead or speaking with reception when you arrive.

What to Expect in Your Child’s Exam

Our pediatric and developmental eye exams assess your child’s entire visual system. These exams include how well their eyes work together and how well they communicate with the brain. During their exam, we will check their eyes and eye health using our diagnostic technology.

We will also ask you to complete a questionnaire about your child’s development and any health or academic concerns your child may have. This information can be very helpful to guide our assessment, as many vision concerns can manifest in children struggling with coordination or focus and attention span, leading to behavioral problems or learning disabilities.

By understanding your child’s entire visual system and development in the context of home or school, we can better assess their skills in the clinic. We’ll consider whether prescription eyewear, vision therapy, or both could be beneficial for your child’s success.nt. You’ll receive the written estimate at least 1 day prior to your appointment. How Does Vision Impact Learning?

Up to 80% of classroom learning is visual. To set children up for success in school, they need to have a variety of visual skills already developed for effective reading and learning. This includes their visual acuity, which allows them to see the board clearly and read books or worksheets up close.

They also need to be able to develop eye focusing and tracking skills in order to read along a line of text on the board or on paper. This skill is also necessary for sports, such as following a ball through the air. As well, their eyes need to work well together, called teaming, which is necessary to judge distances and see depth.

Without these skills, children will struggle with classwork, homework, reading, and extracurricular activities such as sports. By monitoring your child’s visual development, we can help keep their learning and growth on track.

Screening for Common Vision Concerns

We screen children for a variety of vision concerns. We measure their visual acuity to make sure that their vision is clear. If we notice a refractive error such as nearsightedness, we may work with you and your child to develop a myopia management plan

As well, we monitor their eyes for signs of amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye turn or crossed eyes), general binocular disorders (eye teaming problems), and other developmental concerns. These conditions can be caused by undercorrected nearsightedness or farsightedness, as well as eye movement control or eye misalignment.

If your child is struggling with a developmental vision problem, such as eye teaming problems, focusing problems, amblyopia, or strabismus, we can refer them to our vision therapy department, the Vision Learning Center. Vision therapy is similar to physical therapy. It helps improve your child’s visual function to correct visual challenges that cannot be treated with glasses or medicine.

Signs of Vision Problems in Children

Children may not always be able to express their vision problems. Young children may lack the vocabulary to articulate their experience, and many children lack the understanding of what “normal vision” should look like. They may think that they see the same way as everyone else.

To help your children receive the vision care they need, be sure to schedule regular eye exams. Between visits to the eye doctor, you can also watch for signs that your child may have a vision problem, including:

  • Covering one eye to see or read
  • Titling their head to one side
  • Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
  • An eye turning in or out
  • Complaints of headaches or fatigue
  • Short attention span
  • Avoiding reading or other close activities
  • Losing their place while reading
  • Holding books, screens, or other items close to their face
  • Struggling with hand-eye coordination

If you notice these signs in your child, they may be struggling with a vision problem. Bring them in for a comprehensive, developmental eye exam.
